Hammond Pond Cleanup

As part of the Access Fund nationwide Adopt-a-Crag event, Hammond Pond saw 80 volunteers on September 8, 2001. Over 40 bags of trash were removed from the Pond and Temple areas, and countless buckets of glass were handpicked from the Pusherman Wall and Alcove. The area below the Lower Pond Wall has taken a beating from increased foot traffic, and the forest has been retreating from the base of the wall. This area was reclaimed with replanted shrubs and wood chips and is now protected by a line of logs. This will give the shrubs and forest a chance to recover. Trails to the Alcove are now better defined through strategic placement of logs and brush.

Hammond Pond Over $260 was raised for the Access Fund through a raffle. Raffle prizes were donated by REI, Boston Rock Gym, Misty Mountain, Black Diamond, New England Ropes, Rock and Ice, Elevation magazine, and Wilderness Experience Unlimited. Many thanks to Steve Oullette of the Metropolitan District Commission and to Chauvin Guides International, which provided free clinics for volunteers. This event was the brainchild of volunteer extraordinaire Scott Sandberg.
