Getting to New Paltz

New Paltz is located at exit 18 on the New York State Thruway (interstate 87). There are two effective routes that can be used from Boston.

  1. Travel all the way west on the Massachusetts Turnpike (interstate 90) and continue into New York on the Berkshire extension of the N.Y. State Thruway. After the Berkshire extension crosses the Hudson River, continue south on the Thruway -- towards New York City. Get off the Thruway at exit 18 -- New Paltz.
  2. Travel west on the Massachusetts Turnpike (interstate 90), but exit at Sturbridge (exit 9). From Sturbridge continue on interstate 84 into and across Connecticut and into New York state. Cross the Hudson River and continue passed Newburgh until reaching the intersection with the N.Y. State Thruway (interstate 87). Travel north on the Thruway for one exit. Get off the Thruway at exit 18 -- New Paltz.

Note: If coming from the north (i.e. Mass Pike) and going straight to the campsite, Kingston (exit 19) is a better exit. Please see campsite directions for more info.

The travel time is about the same for either route. The first route has more tolls, while the second route can often have severe traffic in Connecticut.
